“One More Piece of the Plan”
A few years ago MS Main Street sponsored a Byhalia Main Street Charrette. The purpose of the charrette was to find out the direction Byhalia intends to go in reference to planning, design, architecture, landscape and revitalization of the Town. The three day charrette motivated the community into taking action and doing whatever we could to make a difference. Like so many other small Towns, we have a lot of needs and funding of these projects are costly. Yet the Town was presented a lot of ideas that were attainable and the community was determined to not sit back and wait on funds but to take action and do something to make a difference in our community right away.
By now, I am sure you have heard of my motto, “One More Piece of the Plan”. Byhalia is determined to make a difference reaching out to our community and by acting as a model ourselves, to be a part of “One More Piece of the Plan”, which is our motto for taking action. We have a small park area in the middle of Town, called Brunswick Park, which was revitalized with a new gazebo, sidewalks, sprinkler system, sod, flowers, and flag pole. Several years ago we had our first annual Christmas Parade and ended with Santa at the Park. Beautiful light displays were donated and we had 32 entries in our first parade. Businesses, citizens, and churches were all on board. This was the beginning of getting our momentum started to do more. The Town was buzzing with excitement during the holidays.
The Chamber of Commerce donated a flag pole for the park and we placed a spot light on the flag. The Town purchased Christmas Banners and which were hung around town and we heard great compliments. Since then the local Lion’s club purchased more banners, along with the Byhalia Garden Club, Northcentral Electric Power Association, and other business owners. When a seed was planted it grew to enough banners to change out for every season. This was something visual where the community was able to see things happening.
The Town applied for some smaller grants but again, together they have really made a difference. We were awarded grant funds from Community Foundation of Northwest MS and Healthy Kids Healthy Communities and were able to purchase playground equipment for our “Byhalia Walking Track” park. We also applied for a small grant with MS Nursery and Landscape Association and were awarded funds to do landscaping and plant flowers at our “Welcome Sign” on Hwy 309. Also a donation from Cargill Inc. was used to do landscaping and plant shrubs and flowers at the gazebo area.
We are excited about our Town’s growth, new businesses are moving here and things are happening, just because our community got involved with “One More Piece of the Plan”.
